This sentiment resonates deeply with me as I envision the rest of my life from this day onward and determine what legacy I wish to leave behind for my family and community.  In the life of a family, grandparents play a unique role as architects of a legacy. So, Grandparents, let’s be serious and listen up because this isn't just about leaving a mark in the world— but it's about sculpting a tale that will echo throughout generations!

Ok, so you are hooked and inspired, right?! But you may be wondering where we start, why it matters, and what hurdles might we encounter. Grab a cup of something warm and settle in because we're diving into this journey of a lifetime—the quest to build a life legacy that paints with laughter, warmth, and a whole lot of love. Come along—the adventure awaits!

Legacy-building is not about grand gestures but collecting a treasure trove of shared moments and memories—the joy of crafting a story that family and community can carry in their hearts.

Paint the Future Picture

What do you want it to look like? Yes, life throws curveballs at you and I had my fair share thrown at me! But here I am, now in my senior year at age 66, trying to figure out what I want the last chapters of my story to look like. These golden years are not a time to fade into the background— no, they're an invitation to pick up the paintbrush and create a legacy and hopefully, that'll be talked about around the family dinner table for generations! For me, legacy is not just about what I leave behind financially; but more importantly, it's about the joy of crafting a story that my family and community can carry in their hearts. Legacy-building is not about grand gestures but collecting a treasure trove of shared moments and memories.

Clarify the Vision

To be real—it’s not easy to craft a painting of your life. I've been pondering a lot about this too–about my vision, my purpose, and what makes me happy. I know I am God’s handiwork, and He is making me into His Masterpiece as it says in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

So, for me, it’s not about fame or fortune; it's about crafting a strong and loving relationship with my grown daughters and grandsons. Now, they're spread across different states, but despite the distance that spans states, our commitment to building bonds remains strong—we're making it a mission to fill our lives with shared love.

Defining Family Legacy:

What is Family Legacy

Picture this: A legacy is more than a dusty book of family trees tucked away in a corner. Instead, it's a dynamic force that shapes the future. For grandparents, a legacy is the gift of continuity, a guidebook if you well, for the generations that follow. A well-crafted family legacy can instill values, preserve cultural roots, and serve as a source of inspiration for navigating life's twists and turns; it’s an intentional and meaningful transmission of values, traditions, and wisdom from one generation to the next. (For me, as I write my Memoir, I hope to instill the value of resilience, love, and hope to my progeny.)

Why We Should Care:

Here's the golden nugget—caring about family legacy isn't just for us. It's a gift to our grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and beyond. It’s like planting a tree whose shade we may never sit under. But it's the bridge that connects generations, a timeless treasure chest filled with wisdom, love, and the shared tapestry of a family's journey. And the bonus to you as grandparents–it actively contributes to a sense of fulfillment and purpose! It's our chance to leave a meaningful mark on the world, however big or small.

In essence, building a family legacy is an investment in the future, a gift that keeps on giving, ensuring our impact lives on!

Paint Your Grandparenting Legacy:

Our Story: Building Bridges Across Oceans

As grandparents, my husband and I are writing a unique chapter in our family legacy. Our grandsons, one in Hawaii and the other in Alaska, but despite the geographical distance, our grandsons hold a special place in our hearts and they are the heartbeat of our narrative. We make it a priority to visit them twice a year, cherishing the moments and memories that bridge the miles. Looking ahead, when my husband retires in 5 years, our dream is to split our residence between Alaska and Hawaii, to ensure that we are bridging the physical gap to be closer to our beloved grandsons.

Paint your grandparenting legacy beautifully that is unique to you.

Why is it Important to Craft a Legacy for Lasting Generational Impact?

  • Values Preservation—a family legacy preserves the values that are dear to the heart of grandparents. It acts as a compass for our grandchildren guiding them through the crazy twists of life.

  • Connection Across Generations—we want our grandchildren to feel that sense of belonging and connection. It's the glue that binds us together, no matter how far apart we may be. A strong family legacy connects grandparents, parents, and grandchildren in one beautiful thread.

  • Wisdom Transfer—grandparents often hold a wealth of wisdom. We've lived through a lot, right? This wisdom is an offer of a timeless gift, offering insights and lessons that withstand the test of time.

  • Cultural Continuity—for families with cultural roots, it’s about keeping those traditions alive! Our family legacy ensures that our heritage does not fade away but continues to thrive.

How to Navigate the Challenges:

The Obstacles to Planning:

Being Intentional

Now, let's talk about the elephants in the room—the obstacles that might trip us up on this journey. Time, distractions, and the chaos of modern life can blur our focus. The hurdle isn't a lack of love or desire; it's often the whirlwind of daily existence that makes intentional legacy planning feel like a lofty dream.

Common Obstacles to Planning and Being Intentional:

  • Lack of Communication—let's face it; not all families are great at sitting down and having heart-to-hearts about values, I understand that. But it's time to change that because this lack of communication can hinder the planning of a family legacy.

  •  Procrastination—we've all said, "I'll do it tomorrow," but tomorrow has a way of turning into next year. Let's not miss out on the opportunities to build and document our legacy.

  • Conflict Within the Family–we all have family dramas…it's as old as time! But it’s time for some open conversations and address some unresolved issues—it’s part of the legacy-building adventure!

  • Undefined Values—if we're not clear on what we stand for, how can we build a legacy around those values? It's time to define what matters most.

Where to Start and How to Build a Family Legacy:

Beginnings can be daunting, but fear not. Start with the cornerstone—your values. What matters most to you? What stories do you want echoing through the ages? From there, delve into shared experiences, traditions, and lessons learned. Maybe you feel inclined to create a family mission statement—a compass that guides your legacy ship through the seas of time.

  • Reflect on Values—begin by identifying and clarifying the core values that define your family. What principles do you want to pass down?

  • Document Personal Stories—encourage storytelling. Share personal experiences, anecdotes, and life lessons. Consider creating a family journal or digital platform to document these stories.

  • Establish Family Traditions—establish traditions and rituals that reflect your family's values. Whether it's a yearly reunion, holiday customs, or shared activities, these rituals create a sense of continuity.

  • Financial Planning—consider the financial aspects of the legacy. This may involve setting up trusts, designating beneficiaries, or gifting assets strategically.

Where to start in crafting a family legacy can be daunting—begin with your family values.

Investing in Tomorrow:

Now, legacy isn't just about the here and now; it's a gift to the future. My husband and I believe in blessing our children and grandchildren while we are still alive. As part of our legacy plan, we are establishing custodial accounts for each of our young grandsons—because investing is like planting seeds for their future, and the best gifts are the ones that keep on giving, right? These custodial accounts are more than financial assets; they represent our dedication to providing opportunities and support for their dreams. It's a tangible way to contribute to their journey and to leave a lasting impact that goes beyond material wealth!

Details on Custodial Accounts:

Opening a custodial account for your grandchildren is like giving them a financial treasure chest. It's a straightforward process that involves selecting a financial institution, completing a simple application, and designating an adult as the custodian (usually you!). These accounts, often called Uniform Gift to Minors Act (UGMA) or Uniform Transfer to Minors Act (UTMA) accounts, allow you to contribute money on behalf of the minor and manage the investments until they reach adulthood.

Here's a quick guide to get you started on how to open a custodial account for minors or a college fund account (this is not a financial, legal, investment or tax advice):

  1. Choose the Right Account: Look into 529 College Savings Plans, Coverdell Education Savings Account (ESA) or Custodial Accounts (UGMA/UTMA). Each has pros and cons—read up on it or consult an advisor, then choose one that aligns with your wishes.

  2. Gather Necessary Information: You'll need the minor's Social Security number, birth date, and other relevant details. Get the paperwork in order.

  3. Open the Account: Head to the financial institution of your choice (online or in person) and follow their account opening process. It's usually straightforward and can often be done online.

  4. Select Investments: Once the account is set up, you can choose where to invest the funds—stocks, bonds, ETFs, or a mix. It's like tending to a garden—you decide what grows.

  5. Designate a Custodian: You'll act as the custodian until the child reaches the age of majority (usually 18 or 21, depending on the state). During this time, you manage the funds and make decisions on their behalf.

  6. Gift and Grow: Contribute regularly (monthly or annually), gift on special occasions, and watch the accounts grow over time. It's a financial gift that keeps on giving, whether it's for education, starting a business, or a down payment on a home.

Gifting regularly and watch the accounts grow over time!

Building a Legacy for Future Generations:

Imagine it as passing on more than just family heirlooms. It's about contributing to their future by establishing a financial gifting plan, sharing our values, traditions, love, and wisdom, and the quirky stories that make us who we are! For me, being a proud grandmother, it's leaving a roadmap for my descendants as they navigate this crazy journey called life.

Let me share with you with some Bible verses that continually inspire me as a grandmother:

“A good person leaves an inheritance for their grandchildren…” Proverbs 13:22

“We will not hide these truths (God’s truths) from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders.” Psalm 78:4

“But the godly will flourish like palm trees…Even in old age, they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green.” Psalm 92:12,14

So, dear reader, as you journey through your legacy contemplation, consider this your nudge to shape the narrative actively. What echoes of laughter, what whispers of wisdom, what footprints of love do you want to scatter along your life's path? Join me in this legacy-crafting adventure; drop a comment and share your thoughts and stories!

Your legacy awaits—craft it with intention, and live it with joy because, in the end, the love we sow today blooms into tomorrow's legacy!
